Hi friends, you know the drill. However, this time I'm putting a little spin on it. Here is a list of things that made me happy these last two weeks, most of which happen to be various forms of media.
Wendell and Wild / Entergalatic
Run, don't walk, to Netflix right now and watch these movies. These are both animated films that showcase Black leads and cast in them. It was so cool to watch each of these movies and see Blackness displayed in this kind of media, which it typically isn't. I hate to be on my soapbox, but these movies truly ate. Aside from having a Black cast and depicting Blackness in animation, they were just really good!
Wendell and Wild is about a girl who lost her parents at eight years old who goes on to live in a group home. She then is arrested later in life and ends up going to juvenile detention and is released into the guardianship of a private school as a second chance. The film dives into discussion on privatization of prisons and the affects that has on local communities, more specifically how they destroy poorer communities and place prisons within them. It sounds more serious than it came across as, but I think that's what makes it great. It handles a serious topic but engages the supernatural to do so. Really really good movie, plus the main character is a Black alt girl. Even though I'm not one myself, it was cool to see that representation to show that Black girls can dawn all kinds of aesthetics. Plus she ate with those boots she was wearing, the girls that love to claim they're 5'8 need to go get some of those.
Entergalactic is a love story between two neighbors in New York City. One a comic book artist and muralist, the other an artist herself who makes sculptures I believe. The female protagonist is voiced by one of my favorite actresses ever, Jessica Willams, and the male lead is voiced by Kid Cudi. In addition to the animation, Kid Cudi curated the entire soundtrack so the movie has an album of the same name attached to it. The songs, most of them, are amazing. I fear Kid Cudi can't sing (in some songs!) so not all of them are bangers, but a few of them are. My fav songs are "Angel", "Maybe So", "Can't Shake Her", and "In Love". I've rewatched this movie twice now--its's an animated rom-com, and I am absolutely in love. Please watch this, watch it with me, watch it alone, just watch it. It made me so so happy.
2. Midnights, Taylor Swift (album)
TT Swift ate I fear and she left absolutely no crumbs. It's actually ridiculous how much I enjoy this album, I am quite embarrassed, but can put my embarrassment to the side to encourage more people to enjoy this album with me. My favorite songs (in order) are "Glitch", "Midnight Rain", "Lavender Haze", "Question..?", and "Karma". This album was unexpected, for me, and boy has it made my year. I truly hate to say it. I love it so much. Curse this white woman for making me bop my head to her tunes! The pen is insane. Okay. Enough praise. But, yes, this is what I will be listening to for the rest of the year. Also fuck Drake and 21 savage for ruining their album for me, we can never have good things.
3. Coco Jones
Coco Jones, my Hillary Banks, released an EP. It was good! My favorite songs are "ICU" and "Spend It". Especially "Spend It". God, I love "Spend It". 4. Tems Always. Everyday of the year. She wrote Rihanna's new song!!! Her pen!! 5. Ariana Grande
Relistening to my Ariana Grande playlist and that's a pop icon right there. Banger, after banger, after banger. Living icon fr. Too much? Idk, not enough, I think. 6. Ice Spice
Bikini Bottom (WHY WOULD I GO?); No Clarity (LIKE WHAT DID I DO?!). 7. Jelani Aryeh
WE MET THE BAND! I'VE SEEN HIM IRL. CRAZY. Favorite songs at the moment: "Daunt", "Angels", "Overexposed". Shoutout Trel for putting me on.
8. "Telfy", Maiya the Don
She devoured. I am in love with this song. Bars on bars on bars. We need more. "Bad bitch when I'm up in the function!"
9. "Spread Thin", Mariah the Scientist
Idk who said she can't sing, but regardless this song bops. Don't watch the TikToks...
10. Renaissance, Beyoncé
I'm sure you've listened already, but I haven't done one of these in awhile so must be sure to report on Renaissance. Yeah, lives were changed.
11. Love is Blind Season 3
I have so many comments--all about Bartiste, but I don't feel like typing all of that so...but, yeah, he is such an interesting character. DM for more, I will send voice notes tho lol.
12. Tell Me Lies
This is a tv show on Hulu rn. I watched this show as the episodes released every week and it had me HOOKED! The season finale aired two weeks ago and I'm so sad, but honestly this series was so good, real tv is back! Think Pretty Little Liars, One Tree Hill (even though I never watched, lol), any teen drama with mystery, suspense, and lies, this is better. Well, maybe not better, but it is really well done. I hope they keep going down this path because they've got a hit on their hands.
Okay friends, that is what has been making me happy lately. Thank you for reading. Goodnight and farewell.
